General comments

Peril in Pleasantville was written using Inform 7 and compiled to gblorb format. For details on playing gblorb files see http://inform7.com/if/interpreters/
In this walkthrough commands that are intended to be entered into the game are written in all lower case (and separated by commas if they are part of a sequence of commands). Comments are in brackets. Options, such as the different ‘ask about’ topics, are in square brackets. General description is in sentence case.

Part 2 seems to break a lot of the 'ask about’ and 'think about’ responses, so you will often get no response (which is also why I mostly haven’t bothered listing the available topics).


Undocumented Commands

compliment [girl] (allows you to pay an NPC a compliment, which is necessary to unlock certain scenes)


think about [npc] (tells you what the PC thinks about a particular NPC)

Note that 'think about’ and 'ask about’ will produce different responses at different times (and at some points they will not produce any response, even if they have previously).


Getting Around

Peril in Pleasantville uses standard IF commands for movement: east (e), west (w), north (n), south (s), up (u), down (d), and occasionally enter.


I haven’t provided explicit instructions for getting from one place to another since this is a non-linear game. A rough map is provided below (click to enlarge)

Code Words

At the end of Part 1 you should have received five different code words. If you followed the Part 1 walkthrough, the different possible code words are as follows (not an exhaustive list):


Animals: Badger (beat Rex), Gorilla (beaten by Rex), Turtle (beaten by Rex but did not tutor Contessa)

Fruits & Vegetables: Apple (hung out with Contessa), Beet (went to the movies with Contessa), Carrot (hung out with Emily), Pear (went to the movies with Emily), Tomato (did not date Emily or Contessa)


Fish: Salmon (Tony paid), Marlin (Tony paid and Mae spoken to), Tuna (Tony not paid and Mae spoken to), Shark (Tony not paid), Minnow (Tony paid and Mae spoken to but not complimented), Flounder (Tony not paid and Mae spoken to but not complimented)

Countries: Brazil (begin with $60), China (begin with $60 plus old key), Japan (begin with $120), France (begin with $120 plus old key)


Shapes: Square (cocaine in inventory and wine in kitchen cabinet), Rectangle (wine in kitchen cabinet), Circle (cocaine in inventory), Hexagon (no cocaine or wine)

If you want to experience the game as one consistent narrative you should enter the words you received in Part 1 (unless you did not receive all five, as some people have experienced).


However, if you just want to enjoy all the possible content in the game, you can take advantage of the code word system. For example, if you used the wine in Part 1 and never bought the cocaine (Hexagon), you could enter Square and have both your inventory for Part 2. Alternatively you could choose not to pay Tony in Part 1, since you can just enter a code word that says you did. You can also use code words in combinations that are impossible to achieve in Part 1. For example using Gorilla and Francetogether, since you can’t get the old key if you lose the fight.

At this point there’s not a lot to do that you didn’t have an opportunity to do in Part 1.

Picnic Date


The picnic date is basically the same for all three girls. To see everything you need to have the crackers, brie, grapes, wine and bug spray (all of which can be found in the kitchen of your house).

Do *not* enter the lakefront location between asking the girl on the date and picking them up. In my own testing I have confirmed that doing so will stop the date from triggering. There may be other things that stop the date from triggering, but I have not personally confirmed them.


Pick up girl at 6pm and go to the park (if Katie is your date, you will go there automatically; otherwise you will have to do so manually)

Entering the shack will usually result in the PC being killed by moonshiners. However, at certain times (eg. from 2:58pm to 6:48pm) a farm girl will be present instead and a non-interactive scene will result.

Olivia’s Party


If your date is Emily, Maggie or Jeff remember to pick up some E from Tony’s (he lives in the house on the south side of Berry St). If you’re taking Katie to the party, not buying E will lead to a different scene (see below).

Pick up your date (or Jeff) at 6pm, and go to Olivia’s house (it’s at the end of Maple St behind the iron gate)

Enjoy the scenery until Olivia suggests playing a game

The Game

The party game is essentially random, which means that you’ll occasionally get results that break it, so it’s wise to save beforehand. If you want a certain result, you’ll have to undo and re-spin the bottle until you get it.

There are four rounds. The first three rounds (stripping, kissing, rubbing) are always the same. The fourth round is oral sex if you brought E, and masturbation if you didn’t.


If you brought E, there will be a non-interactive scene involving Olivia, the PC and whoever the PC brought with them; after that you can spy on either Becky or Ivy.

If you didn’t bring E, the party will end after the fourth round (but if Katie was your date, you’ll meet someone on the way home).


Finally

When you’ve finished everything you want to do (and it’s after 11pm) go home and go to sleep.


Day 6

At this point the game becomes much more linear.
